Rules of Fashion According to Marc Jacobs
Marc Jacobs, the king of chic, can make anything look fabulous. Don’t mind if he steps into your closet to do his thing? Excellent! Here we go…
Rule #1: Don’t Be a Slave to Vintage…Jacobs is known for his seventies inspired looks, but his design philosophy is about reinterpreting periods (such as the seventies) but not re-creating it. While elements of the seventies were hip and sexy, you definitely don’t want to look like you just stepped out of that era. Re-creating looks from particular eras will outdate you- hello, Charlie’s Angel!
Rule #2: Don’t Be a Slave to Trends…Jacobs says, “There will always be trends, but you have to wear what you like.” Take jeans for example, they are a classic. Evaluate your go-to jeans, the ones that always look amazing (and are probably a minute from falling apart), look for new pairs along the same lines. By the way, having several pairs of denim jeans in the same style is not a rut – it’s a signature. 😉
Rule #3: Open Your Mind…Jacobs says “I think anything goes. Wear whatever you want, wherever you want.” So, hippie flares with a ladylike blouse or skinnies with a dress over them? Give it a try – Jacobs says, “Being happy and exuding confidence is always in fashion!”
